Jan De Nys (°1949) is bekend als de voormalige eigenaar van IN SITU galerie in Aalst en als curator van diverse (stads)tentoonstellingen. Minder bekend is dat hij van 1967 tot 1987 ook actief was als kunstenaar. Nadat hij zijn galerie heeft stopgezet, heeft hij in 2015 opnieuw de draad van zijn artistieke praktijk opgenomen. Daarbij valt op dat zijn werk – ondanks de lange breuk – opvallend coherent is. De Nys’ interesseveld gaat uit naar het statuut van het beeld in onze hedendaagse maatschappij. Hij werkt doorgaans met gevonden foto’s of afbeeldingen in de openbare ruimte omdat die vaak verweerd zijn door de natuurelementen. Die foto’s gaat hij boven elkaar leggen waardoor een nieuw beeld ontstaat dat zich niet onmiddellijk laat ontcijferen. Eerst maakt hij zijn collages manueel - als een voorbereidende schets - voordat ze worden overgezet op computer.

Jan De Nys (b. 1949) is known as the former owner of the IN SITU gallery in Aalst and as the curator of various (municipal) exhibitions. A lesser-known fact is that he was also active as an artist from 1967 to 1987. After closing his gallery, he picked up his artistic practice again in 2015. What is striking is that, despite the long hiatus, his work is remarkably consistent. De Nys’s field of interest is the status of the image in contemporary society. He usually works with found photographs or images in the public space because they are often weathered by the elements. These photographs are superimposed so that a new image emerges which cannot be immediately deciphered. He begins by makinga manual collage – a sort of preliminary sketch – which is then transferred onto a computer.
